Oracle opens data centre to provide cloud services across Africa

Africa will be the U.S. company's 37th "cloud region" - an area that allows customers to get faster access from a local data centre, in this case in Johannesburg.
Oracle is racing to open at least 44 cloud regions this year as it plans to catch up with cloud computing rivals such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google.
Though Oracle has no plans for more data centers in Africa this year, more could come next year as the company explores areas such as West Africa, Cherian Varghese, regional managing director for Middle East and Africa, told Reuters.
Increased demand for faster computing from African banks and telecom firms has attracted big cloud operators into the largely untapped market, with Microsoft the first to launch data centers in South Africa, followed by Amazon and Huawei.
Fast connectivity provided by a submarine communication cable and being Africa's most developed economy have made South Africa a key location for cloud operators, with over 50 data centres in the country, mostly near Cape Town and Johannesburg.
However, South Africa comes with infrastructure challenges, such as high power prices and frequent power cuts, meaning additional costs have to be set aside for back-up power.
Smaller cloud operators are also trying to grab a piece of the fast-expanding market for data localisation.

Suffolk consultant Miles Vartan said new rules brought in this year mean all goods coming into this country must now be declared immediately.
The government said businesses needed to adapt to new processes.
Mr Vartan, managing director of Vartan Compliance Consultancy, based in Felixstowe, Suffolk, said before 2022 firms could complete paperwork on consignments after they had been shipped, but this must now be done beforehand.
"That will mean vehicles not arriving on time at the manufacturing line, drivers running out of hours and perishable good being spoilt and having to be disposed of," he said.
"It will be a short-term thing for those prepared to devote some resources to it. It is going to be a longer-term problem for people who decide to ignore it.
"In July you may be subject to the physical inspection of your consignments and you'll be asked to go to that border post. If you don't go the driver or the company that owns that haulage could be fined."
UK exports to the EU in the first ten months of 2021 were down 12% on 2019 - pre-pandemic - levels. Exports from Britain to the rest of the world - non-EU countries - were down 7%.
Mark Newton, managing director of LMK Thermosafe Ltd, based in Haverhill Suffolk, said the firm was still doing strong business with mainland Europe, despite the extra costs.

"I have high expectations of myself and what I want to achieve in Beijing. Having this injury, it's not ideal but it works in my favour to have all of my experience from previous Games behind me."
Graham will fly to Ruka, Finland this weekend to rejoin the Australian moguls team for final preparations on snow before the Feb. 4-20 Beijing Games.

US health officials say COVID-19 deaths and hospitalisations 'comparatively' low despite Omicron surge
