and his teammates enjoyed a raucous locker room celebration after defeating the in the ' 2019 regular season finale. While they were happy to beat the a division rival, the Chiefs' celebration had more to do with the dropping their Week 17 game against the , as New England's lo s handed Kansas City the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. The Chiefs, who ended up not leaving Kansas City during the AFC playoffs, parlayed their good fortune into a Super Bowl victory.Home field advantage is one of the most coveted things in pro sports. It's hard to imagine a time when teams weren't awarded with a home field advantage after winning their division or claiming the conference's best record. But that's exactly what happened to the 1972 Dolphins, who had to face the on the road in the AFC Championship Game despite posting a perfect 14-0 record during the regular season.Back then, the home teams in the playoffs were decided based on a yearly divisional rotation. The only exception was for wild card teams, who would always play on the road. Within each conference, the three division winners and one wild card Alec Ingold Jersey  team qualified for the postseason. There was no playoff seeding at that time, something that wouldn't be implemented until 1975. That's why the Dolphins, the first team to go unblemished during the regular season, had to face the up-and-coming Steelers (who went 11- Willie Snead IV Jersey 3 during the regular season) in Three Rivers Stadium on Dec. 31, 1972.A week removed from defeating the in the infamous "Immaculate Reception" game, the Steelers took an early 7-0 lead over the Dolphins, who needed a late touchdown to defeat the visiting the previous week. But after the Steelers' defense forced a Dolphins punt, Don Shula decided to gamble by calling a trick play that would change the complexion of the game.  With Pittsburgh's special teams unit going through the motions, Dolphins punter Larry Seiple took the snap, waited for the Steelers' players to turn downfield, then tucked the ball into his arm while finding room to run on the far sideline. Seiple's 37-yard run, the longest run of the day by either team, set up Larry Csonka's game-tying touchdown.   One of the iconic plays in and history occurred in the 1972 AFC Championship Game when P Larry Seiple took off on a fake punt for a first down. Without that play, there may not have been a Perfect Season.  Columnist, Phins com (@PhinsChris)  "From the game film we had seen, when they ran a certain return, everybody would hit and then they would peel to the outside," Shula in a documentary of the '72 Dolphins, "and as Larry stepped up, he saw them starting to peel, not paying any attention to him. So he just followed them as they peeled to the outside.""I remember standing down on the sideline and hearing the Steelers fans screaming, 'Turn around!'" Clelin Ferrell Jersey  recalled Csonka, who combined with fellow running back Mercury Morris to rush for 144 yards against Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain defense.  "It was a big play, a big turning point in that game," added Dolphins defensive lineman Manny Fernandez. While Seiple's run gave the Dolphins a spark, they still needed more from their offense. At intermi sion, with the score tied, Shula made another change when he benched quarterback Earl Morrall, who was 10-0 as a starter that season, in favor of Bob Griese, who had mi sed most of the year after suffering a broken leg and a dislocated ankle during the fifth game of the season."One of the toughest decisions I ever had to make in my coaching career," Shula said of his decision to bench Morrall, his quarterback in Baltimore when the were upset by Joe Namath and the in Super Bowl III. "I looked him in the eye and he looked right back at me and said, 'Coach, I don't agree with you, I wanna go back in, but I respect your decision.' That's the kind of guy that he was. Griese went in and threw the pa s to Warfield that got us going and gave us that spark that we needed to win the game."  Griese's 52-yard completion to receiver Paul Warfield set up the first of two touchdowns by running back Jim Kiick, as the Dolphins turned a 10-7 deficit into a 21-10 lead. And while the Steelers would score a late touchdown, it wasn't enough, as the still perfect Dolphins left Pittsburgh with a 21-17 victory. While three of the first six Super Bowls were played at Miami's Orange Bowl (the Dolphins' home stadium at the time), Super Bowl VII would be played at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the site of the first-ever Super Bowl. And despite entering  Willie Brown Jersey the game with a 16-0 record, the Dolphins were three-point underdogs against a team that lost three games during the regular season. A likely reason why the Dolphins were underdogs was the fact that Shula was 0-2 in Super Bowls entering Super Bowl VII. A year earlier, Miami scored just three points in their lo s to the in Super Bowl VI."I'm sitting there with a reputation of a coach that can win but he can't win the big game," Shula recalled. "And you don't want that ever said about you when you're in the coaching profe sion."  While completing their regular season -- andavenging their lo s in Super Bowl VI -- was motivation enough, the desire to give Shula his first Super Bowl gave the Dolphins' players an extra incentive to beat the Redskins."There was no way he could get to another Super Bowl and lose," Fernandez said. "Not Don Shula. If you know the man at all, you just know, that couldn't happen, wouldn't happen, Darren Waller Jersey  wasn't gonna happen, end of story. We were gonna win that ballgame."The Dolphins would not lose this one. Led by Csonka's 112 rushing yards, Fernandez's 17 tackles, and game MVP Jack Scott's two interceptions, the Dolphins defeated the Redskins, 14-7. And while Miami succe sfully defended their title in 1973 (they played both of their playoff games at home this time), their 17-0 season remains their crowning achievement.  "One time, one place in the universe, one space, was occupied by perfection," Csonka said of Miami's perfect season, "and we got to be a part of it. And I'm damn proud I got to be a part of it." Click here Click here Click here

Bill O'Brien has taken flack for what's arguably the worst move of the NFL offseason, trading away to the as the took on and his remaining contract, an albatro s for a running back in today's NFL. O'Brien finally had a chance to explain why he would trade arguably the best wide receiver in football with little return."I would say the deal with Arizona was a deal that we thought Joe Cardona Jersey  was in the best interest of our team," O'Brien said on a conference call with reporters, . "DeAndre Hopkins was a great football player for us here. He made so many plays for us. We love DeAndre Hopkins. But he had three years left on his deal and he wanted a raise. We weren't going to be able to go in that direction."Hopkins had three years and $ Jakob Johnson Jersey 39.9 million remaining on a five-year deal he signed in 2017, a bargain for a player of his production. Hopkins ranks second in catches (393), third in yards (5,069) and third in touchdowns (35) over the past four seasons, ranking right up there with and amongst the league leaders.Jones and Thomas received their deals over the past year, so Hopkins was due for a raise. Hopkins is currently the 14th highest-paid wide receiver in the  Brandon Bolden Jersey NFL in terms of average annual salary, counting the remaining years on his contract. O'Brien just didn't want to deal with the busine s of the NFL, even though he is a general manager."There's a lot of things that go into trades. How much are you going to keep on contractually? What type of player are you bringing in? What type of player are you losing? And what is in the best interest of the team? Capital T. Capital E. Capital A. Capital M," O'Brien said. "Every decision we make as long as I'm the football coach here, will always be made in the best interest of the team."  The Texans traded Hopkins and a 2020 fourth-round pick to the Cardinals for Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick, and a 2021 fourth Damien Harris Jersey -round pick. That's not nearly enough for a player of Hopkins' caliber, especially since he had 104 catches for 1,165 yards and seven touchdowns last season. In comes Johnson and the remaining two years and $20,156,250 he's owed, a huge amount for a running back that had just 345 yards and two touchdowns last season (3.7 yards per carry). Johnson was benched in favor of and in Arizona, leaving the Cardinals stuck with a contract that appeared untradeable. Then O'Brien stepped in and gave them a "Get Out of Jail Free" card.  "We felt we had a great offer from Arizona that included picks, it involved an excellent three-down running back who's hungry and humble and can't wait to get started," O' Tedy Bruschi Jersey Brien said. "David Johnson is going to be a great addition to our football team." Click here Click here Click here

In theory, it is difficult to quibble with the smart and progre sive approach the have taken to their rebuild under general manager Chris Grier. I've long been a proponent of them finally taking the long-view  and full roster teardown  in order to best position themselves for potential sustained succe s.And Friday's trades  moving out of the third overall selection in a trade with the , and then eventually back into the sixth  Thomas Davis Sr. Jersey spot via a swap with the  are again a testament to that. There is a clear vision and execution and method to their maneuvers and roster/a set manipulations. I'm not wavering from championing any of that as an organizational strata. However, we have reached a point now, with expectations raised, when this enterprise is shifting from theory to practice  as in finding and developing the best from those draft selections with all involved working in synergy. It's about how much production those young players yield every week, and how that translates to wins. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some trepidation about how this will play out. Will there be unity between the front office and the coaching side of things? Will Brian Flores' staff  which seems to be ever-changing  be able to bring out the very best of the draft haul? Is this coaching staff  which played a lot more of the yo-yo stuff with than I would have liked  going to expertly incubate and cultivate the QB, after even more turnaround on the offensive staff and now with a fairly bizarre system with dueling offensive coordinators?Because at this point  with how this is set up  it's all about Tua. This rebuild will go as he goes. He is everything, and all parties need to be all-in with him. Some around the league wonder how sympatico things will be in this regard in Miami, and whether in his heart Flores coveted , who shocked the football world by lighting the league up when rushed into duty as a rookie with the . And Flores comes from a culture in New England where the coach has unfettered power; checks and balances don' Julian Stanford Jersey t really exist. And we've seen that leap to the hasty demise of many a young Bill Belichick disciple as they have moved on to take over their own team.  What many in the scouting community would tell you is that  one year out  the Dolphins may not have maximized their haul from their three first-round picks from 2020. Draft cla ses aren't cemented in 12 months  not even close  especially when a first-round quarterback is involved. But Tua is already a polarizing figure among those who hold stopwatches for a living, some thought they reached for offensive lineman and the verdict is out on corner , too. It's not as if this first-round haul took the world by storm in 2020 and emerged as sure things. And it's fair to revisit Flores' inability to properly utilize safety  who became the last of the great exodus out of South Beach in trade  and wonder if the decision to deal him for what amounted to the 18th overall pick (used on Jackson) was misguided (Fitzpatrick was selected 11th overall in 2018 and quickly became a star for the ).  Miami took a much more tempered approach to free agency this year, by and large, after splurging all over a year ago, getting to take a look-see at , and otherwise adding depth players who in many cases they are familiar with from the past. But it's not as if they added anyone you can absolutely count on for immediate impact (Fuller enters the season on a suspension and his injury woes are well chronicled). And the Dolphins' 2020 cla s included pumping a whopping $32M into cornerbacks alone, though the and Erick Flowers signings were inspired. But they also already dealt  who was supposed to spearhead their new-and-improved pa s rush  and they've already cut (a New England guy) a year after making him their offseason centerpiece; le s than ideal and perhaps disconcerting. It may be sour grapes, but what Van Noy has said, and left unsaid, about his brief dalliance in Miami doesn't reflect well on Flores, either. Let's just say it's fair to have your antennas up a bit with this stuff, and Van Noy's speedy retreat back to Foxborough adds some spice Royce Freeman Jersey  to this rivalry and keeps the Dolphins' odd year with him under the microscope moving forward. So, it's hardly been all roses and chocolates to this point, some feelings have been hurt and mistakes have certainly been made."If you go back and look at everything they did last year  draft included  it's not like they are hitting home runs," said one team executive who has done busine s with the Dolphins. "Does the coach like Tua as much as the GM? Is everyone fully invested in that? Colin Thompson Jersey  Because it didn't always look like it with how they yanked him around. A lot of the guys they signed (last March) are gone, and those three first round picks have a lot to prove. If you use Fitzpatrick the right way (able to range as a ballhawk) on his rookie contract, do you have to spend all that money on corners?"  Another executive said: "They get a lot of positive headlines from you guys (the media), but how good is that roster right now? How many do-overs would they want?"And now comes the hardest part. Finding the right player and the right fits when you are expected to start contending. The Dolphins currently have 13 picks in the first three rounds over the next three drafts. Yeah, read that last sentence again. Pretty staggering. They hold the sixth and 18th pick this year, and two picks in the second round (36 and 50), and one in the third round. Four picks in the top 50 is where you want to be, although this draft is fraught with a little more peril and ambiguity given the ma sive scouting restrictions that were in place and the very limited sample size of games for many prospects (including many opting out entirely).  And, it's worth pointing out, I suppose, that the Dolphins have just one selection between picks 81 and 230, taking them almost out of day three of the draft entirely, where the best organizations do some of their best work.Next year, Miami has the 49ers' first-round pick, one pick in the second round and two in the third round, and in 2023 they currently have two first-round picks, and one in each of the next two rounds. Of course, a lot could change between now Cam Newton Jersey  and then with how this team flips picks. And, again, full marks to Grier for astutely managing all of this and getting in position to cash in.But without all sides pulling together and without some stability in the coaching staff and approach, no amount of draft capital is enough. Merely revisit the several failed versions of this stuff that the have attempted (before finally getting it right after constant front office and coaching churn), or go back and look at what the turned all of those draft picks from the RG III trade into (more specifically, how little value they ultimately gleaned).  A full-scale rebuild is hardly foolproof, and there will be considerable heat on the Dolphins with expanded playoffs, and with some perennial AFC powerhouses like New England and Pittsburgh in transition (if not sliding), and others like Tenne see and Baltimore losing key talent in free agency. The spotlight will burn bright on this team, and its 2020 draft cla s, in particular, to lead a charge back to the postseason. And, with another odd staffing construct with two offensive coordinators, questions will continue to be asked of Flores as well. The honeymoon, one suspects, is over (it's already quickly ended for several prominent coaches and players there), and results will be judged in the standings, and not the number of first round selections, moving forward. "Look, that league's going to fold anyway, so we'll see you next year."Those were the words uttered by then-Colts owner to Carroll Rosenbloom to Ron Mix in the spring of 1960. A standout offensive lineman at USC, Mix had been drafted by both the NFL's and the brand new American Football League's Boston . Mix was offered more money to play for the AFL, so he asked Rosenbloom if there was any wiggle room in regards to his po sible salary if he chose to play for the two-time defending NFL champions. Rosenbloom, in so many words, dismi sed Mix's request while banking on Mix being available when the new pro football league inevitably closed shop the following spring."That was the opinion of the National Football League and the teams at the time, that the new upstart league would fold," said Mix who currently serves as president of the .To the surprise of many, the AFL never folded. In fact, each of the AFL's 10 teams currently play in the NFL: the , , , , Patriots, , , , , and . On Monday night, millions will watch as the Chargers and the undefeated Raiders square off in an AFC West showdown. While the AFL technically ceased to exist following the league merge in 1970, the impact of the AFL is very much alive and well.Mix, who went on to enjoy a Hall of Fame career with the Chargers before spending his final season with the Raiders, recently spoke with CBS Sports about the AFL's enduring legacy. With Mix's experience serving as our compa s, we created a list of the five things fans should know about the AFL heading into Monday night's game between the Raiders and Chargers.  Created in 1960, the AFL aspired to be a hipper, fresher alternative to the NFL. Teams had flashy names and wore bright-colored uniforms. The AFL product was also more exciting in that it featured significantly more pa sing than their counterpart league. The AFL had several household names at the quarterback position that included "Broadway" Joe Namath, pro football's first 4,000-yard pa ser. Other notable AFL pa sers included Chargers quarterback John Hadl, Kansas City's Len Dawson, Buffalo's Jack Kemp, Oakland's Daryle Lamonica, and Miami's Bob Griese. Hadl, who was drafted by both the NFL's and AFL's Chargers in 1962, led the Chargers to consecutive AFL title game appearances in 1964 and '65. Both years, the Chargers fell to Kemp and the Bills."John was an outstanding player," Mix said of his former teammate.  Oren Burks Jersey "You ask who he reminds me of today, I would say Patrick Mahomes in that John could run. He was an excellent athlete. He was also an immediate leader."  Hadl replaced Tobin Rote as the Chargers' starting quarterback after Rote helped lead the franchise to its first and only championship in 1963. Similar to today's offenses, the Chargers' offense featured two running backs in Paul Lowe and Keith Lincoln. Lowe ran for 1,010 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 6.5 yards per carry during the Chargers' championship season. Lincoln ran for 826 yards and five scores while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. No skill position player took more advantage of the AFL's wide-open attack than Chargers receiver Lance Allworth. Nicknamed "Bambi" for his gracefulne s on the field, Allworth dominated AFL defenses for nearly the entire 1960s. He retired a year after catching a touchdown pa s from legend Roger Staubach in Super Bowl VI."Lance was the best I've ever seen, including the present time," Mix said of Allworth, who in 2019 was included in the NFL's 100th anniversary team. "He never  Jonathan Garvin Jersey dropped a pa s. He played at a time when cornerbacks could be hitting the players all the way down the field. But more importantly, he played on a team where we had so many offensive weapons and Sid distributed the ball among those guys. In today's game, Lance would have twice as many catches.  "We had a lot of great players, but all of us on the team thought that Lance was special." Mix shared a story that sums up how much he and his Chargers teammates revered Allworth, who in 1978 became the first AFL player to receive induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame."We're flying back from an eastern road trip, and we hit some horrific weather," Mix recalled. "And the plane is shaking and going up and down, and I'm convinced that the plane is going to crash. Then I remembered that Lance was on board, and I relaxed as I thought, 'Oh, God wouldn't kill Lance (laughs).' Lance loves that story because it's true!"    "He was always so far behind the defense."Lance Alworth was a superior playmaker for the in the 1960s.  NFL (@NFL)  Evan as a young a sistant, Al Davis championed a deep-pa sing attack. Before rising to prominence as the Raiders principal owner and general manager, Davis served as Mix's position coach at USC before joining the Chargers' inaugural coaching staff."I remember when Al was my position coach at USC," Mix said, "and occasionally, he would say to me, 'Ron, I'm trying to get these coaches to chuck the ball, but I'm not making any progre s at all. So, keep working on your blocking technique.'" Davis came to the right place, as the Chargers head coach, Sid Gillman, was an innovator in his own right. The first coach to be inducted into the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame, Gillman has one of the greatest coaching trees in history. The list of coaches a sociated with Gillman's coaching tree includes Bill Walsh, George Allen, Noll, Al Davis, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, Chuck Knox and Dick Vermeil.  Following his team's 51-10 win over the Patriots in the '63 title game, Gillman approached NFL Commi sioner Pete Rozelle about the Chargers facing the NFL champion . Gillman's idea was rejected, but it planted the seeds for what would eventually be known as the Super Bowl.  The 1963 AFL Championship Keith Lincoln rushes 13-206-1, 6-123 through the airRote 10-15-173-2Hadl 7-11-132-1Alworth 4-77-151-10  Old Time Football  (@Ol_TimeFootball)  "Sid was something of a rocket scientist when it came to offensive football and the pa sing game," said Noll, who served as an a sistant on Gillman's staff in Los Angeles before leading the to four Super Bowls in the 1970s, . "He saw things other coaches hadn't seen. And he wasn't afraid to put his ideas into action.""His dedication was infectious," Mix said of his former coach. "You saw how hard he was working and the amount of time he put in. I think it had an influence on a lot of players about how serious they should take their craft."  The AFL also included coaching legends in Kansas City's Hank Stram, Oakland's John Madden and Buffalo's Lou Saban. Weeb Ewbank, who led the to back-to-back NFL championships in 1958-59, orchestrated the AFL's signature victory. More on that in a second.By the mid-1960s, the NFL grew tired of fighting against the AFL, who by that point had succe sfully landed some of college football's premier players while building a solid fan base. A future merge of the two leagues was announced on June 8, 1966. Until their merger in 1970, the leagues would feature their two champions in a game that would eventually be known as the Super Bowl. The first AFL representative against the NFL's champion was the Chiefs, who won their second  Ty Summers Jersey league title after trouncing the Bills 31-7. The Chiefs were a worthy champion, with a roster that featured eight future Hall of Famers, with six of those players on defense.  Kansas City's opponent in what was then known as the AFL-NFL Championship Game was the , who laid waste to the rest of the NFL during most of the 1960s. Vince Lombardi's team boasted 11 future Hall of Famers. The Packers had won NFL titles in 1961, '62 and in '65 before defeating Tom Landry's Cowboys in a cla sic championship duel in 1966.The Chiefs fought gamely, but a critical interception at the start of the second half turned a 14-10 deficit into a 35-10 defeat. The lopsided final score reinforced the national media's narrative of the AFL's inferiority."We looked at them very carefully in the film, and we realized they had excellent personnel," Packers Hall of Fame linebacker Dave Robinson said of the Chiefs. "The man power was great, really great football players. But they lacked a little bit of the techniques that we were used to. So we had to take advantage of the different techniques. It wasn't so much their fault as it was the rest of the AFL. The defense weren't that strong in the AFL, and so they had never experienced the things we did and the type of football we bring. We had an advantage right there. That was the big thing going for us.  "After they had interleague play, the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders showed their true mettle, and they became very very good teams. All they need was interleague play so they had that experience playing against better defenses."That perceived superiority was reinforced when the Packers dominated the Raiders in the second AFL-NFL Championship Game. The 33-14 win was the fifth and final NFL title for Lombardi's Packers. Many viewed the Packers' succe s in those games as not a validation of Green Bay's greatne s but a disparity level between the two leagues."The national pre s was unkind to the AFL," Mix said. "It was irritating and it did bother us. The first two Super Bowls were lost by the AFL team and the national pre s gloated that it proved how inferior the league was. It was really a very false a se sment, because what it proved was that Green Bay had a great team."  Because of that perceived dominance, the Jets' history-making victory over the Colts in Super Bowl III did little to vindicate the AFL. The AFL had defeated the NFL, but the media had proclaimed New York's win as an all-time upset. AFL's vindication did come one year later in the final game before the merger. A heavy underdog, the Chiefs ran around, over and through the NFL champion in Super Bowl IV 23-7. The AFL went into the merger having won the last two Super Bowls and half of their Super Bowl matchups against the NFL."Here's why I love the Kansas City Chiefs: the Kansas City Chiefs crushed Minnesota, crushed them, in Super Bowl IV, and that absolutely validated the careers of all of us," Mix said. "And when I say I love Kansas City, I mean it. They are one of my favorite teams now, and so are the Jets."  No. 27: 1969 , IV Champions : Greatest Teams on  NFL (@NFL)  The NFL adopted several of the AFL's trademarks. Among them was names on player jerseys, a 14-game schedule (the NFL had 12-game seasons until 1961), and the two-point conversion. The AFL also gave pro football players more bargaining power. For example, upon being drafted by the Colts and the Patriots, Mix told the AFL that he would "definitely go with the Colts" if he had to leave the West Coast to play in Boston. Determined to have Mix as part of their league, Boston and Los Angeles worked out a trade while offering Mix a significantly better contract than was presented to him from the Colts. By virtue of a new TV deal in 1964, the league was able to better financially compete with the NFL. So it was that in 1965, Namath signed a then-record  Randy Ramsey Jersey three-year, $427,000 deal with the Jets. The AFL also broke racial barriers by drafting Black players that included players from historically Black colleges. While teams like the Packers had already begun these practices, the AFL's inclusion of more Black players led to more NFL teams doing the same."In the early AFL days, I would venture to say that the average AFL team had at least twice as many Black players as the average NFL teams," Mix said. "In the Chargers first year of operation, the team had to stay at a low-rent hotel outside of Houston because none of the good hotels permitted Blacks as guests, including the Hilton Hotel in Houston, owned by a franchisee, not the Hilton organization. Chargers owner Baron Hilton spoke to the team and apologized, and told us this would not happen again. True to his word, the next year, we stayed at the Hilton in Houston."Mix points to the 1965 AFL All-Star game as the league's most enduring legacy. The game was slated to be played in New Orleans, who was hoping to land a pro football team of its own. But due to mistreatment from several Black players throughout the week, the players decided to boycott the game."It ushered in racial justice at a time that none existed," Mix said. "We were to report to our first practice. We get on the bus and our coach is doing roll call. Buck Buchanan. No Answer. Bobby Bell. No answer. The coach says, 'Where is everybody?' One of the players said, 'All of the Black players are in the conference room. They're talking about boycotting the game because the way they've been treated.'"So, I get off the bus and the first player I saw was then-Broncos fullback Cookie Gilchrist. I asked him what happened, and he said, 'It was almost impo sible to get any cab to take us to the hotel. When we got to the hotel, they told us to enter through the back. We couldn't get admitted to any restaurants. Some of our players were turned away from a bar at gunpoint. We're not going to play in this game. We're boycotting.'"I said, 'What about staying, because now we've got some national attention called to this. If we stay, then you've got a format.' Cookie said, 'No, the only thing that works is us leaving.' I said, 'Alright, I'll go with you.'"With that, the AFL All-Stars left New Orleans and would ultimately play the '65 All-Star Game in Houston. The racial climate improved in New Orleans over the next few years, and the city was given a NFL team in 1967."New Orleans, which was trying to get an NFL franchise, knew they would not get a franchise because of the national attention," Mix said. "They voted to desegregate the city. So, a bunch of Black athletes from the AFL desegregated a city. It's just kind of amazing." The AFL is still very much alive in today's NFL. The AFL logo is included on the left chest of the Chiefs' jerseys. Pa sing games are operating at an all-time level. Players have more contractual freedom than ever before. Rosters now include players of every size, color and institution. Fittingly, the Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers -- three of the AFL's bedrock franchises -- po se s fast, high-powered pa sing attacks that feature three of the league's  T.J. Slaton Jersey hottest quarterbacks in , and . Along with those quarterbacks, Mix includes Baltimore quarterback as one of his favorite current players to watch.Mix is happy with the current state of football. He's also proud of the role his league played in making pro football what it is today."The AFL game has been built upon as the years went on," Mix said. "As outstanding as it was, now, it's progre sed into almost perfection. The game is so much more fun to watch now that it's so wide open." Click here Click here Click here

The had every reason to be frustrated after Sunday's matchup with the , who stopped a comeback attempt to send Big Blue to 0-4 on the season. But something else sent them -- and their opponent -- over  Raheem Mostert Jersey the edge immediately after the game. As cameras captured in post-game exchanges between the two sides, Giants wide receiver and Rams cornerback were at the center of a big brawl to close Sunday's affair, and it appears that long-brewing family drama between Tate and Ramsey helped spark the scuffle.Dozens of Giants and Rams exchanged shoves following Sunday's 17-9 Los Angeles win, but Tate and Ramsey reportedly swapped punches after getting feisty with each other during the game, provoking the rest of the crowd. Ramsey had one hard hit on Tate, who  Malcolm Brown Jersey caught four pa ses for New York, before the post-game fight, but things got especially heated once the clock  Shaquem Griffin Jersey hit zero, with coaches and team personnel from both sides also chipping in to help de-escalate the situation.  Following their game today, the Rams and Giants had a huge fight at midfield which included Golden Tate and Jalen Ramsey in the middle of it.  Field Yates (@FieldYates)   , both Tate and Ramsey have had an unofficial rivalry for some time:Ramsey is the father of two of Tate's young nieces but broke off a long-term relationship with Tate's sister Breanna while she was pregnant last summer. When Ramsey posted to social media a photo with his new girlfriend last October, Tate made it publicly known he was circling their next head-to-head matchup. Robert Jones Jersey It's unclear if either player -- or others from both the Giants and Rams -- will face discipline from Sunday's exchange. Giants coach Joe Judge has at least said he'll investigate the situation and what led up to the testy post-game meeting.  "I have to see and find out all the details right there," Judge told reporters afterwards. "I don't have anything there yet. Obviously we want to do our fighting between the whistles for 60 minutes. The potential of going 0-16 is no more, which is what Jets head coach  Braden Smith Jersey Adam Gase pointed to after Sunday's shocking win."Our job is to try and go out and win every week," Gase said to reporters after Sunday's game. "I'm happy for our guys. If you watch them work every day and see how hard they compete in games, they deserved this. They deserved it a while ago. We had a few snatched away from us and to finally close out a game against a good team says a lot about what kind of character we have in this locker room."The Jets were seconds away from their first win a few weeks ago, only to give up the winning touchdown with five seconds left in a lo s to the . A winle s season -- and the No. 1 pick -- seemed Jordan Glasgow Jersey  inevitable until Sunday.  New York po sibly lost the chance at the No. 1 overall pick by defeating the Rams, as the currently are in the driver's seat for the top selection with two games to play -- even though they have the same record as the Jets -- based on strength  Art Donovan Jersey of schedule. The hailed backup quarterback as their "relief pitcher" after Week 16's win over the , but if the team needs late-game heroics against the on Sunday, they'll have to count on someone else. , Fitzpatrick has tested positive for COVID- Justin Jackson Jersey 19 and will mi s Week 17's crucial contest. The veteran was a surprise absence at practice earlier in the day,  Austin Ekeler Jersey and now he won't be available for Miami until at least the postseason -- if the Dolphins make it. , the NFL's COVID-19 protocols require a 10-day isolation by players who've contracted the virus, meaning Fitzpatrick may also be sidelined for a potential AFC Wild Card game on Jan. 9 or 10.Coach Brian Flores had already named rookie the starter for Sunday's game, but Fitzpatrick has arguably been the Dolphins' better signal-caller, not  Donald Parham Jr. Jersey to mention a repeat fill-in during Tagovailoa's le ser performances. In deeming him a "relief pitcher," after all, Flores left the door open for more Fitzpatrick playing time. There's been no word yet whether Tagovailoa himself could be considered a high-risk close contact to Fitzpatrick, which would also jeopardize his availability against Buffalo. In the meantime, the Dolphins will call upon veteran reserve Jake Rudock, who's only  Justin Herbert Jersey thrown five career pa ses, to serve as Tagovailoa's backup in Week 17. Rudock has been on and off Miami's practice squad this year but has been re-signed in the wake of Fitzpatrick's COVID test results, per Peli sero.  The Dolphins need a win against the Bills, or a lo s by one of the other AFC Wild Card contenders, Keenan Allen Jersey  in order to qualify for the playoffs. Jr. has tried to make the twice, but was unable to crack the 53-man roster. The third time is appearing to be the charm for the former University of Houston quarterback. In his third training camp with the Eagles (and third year as a receiver), Ward is making it difficult for the Eagles for cut him this time around. Already a reliable special teams presence in the preseason, Ward is establishing himself  David Wells Jersey as a wide receiver in the Eagles offense. On 4th-and-4 from the ' 38-yard line, Eagles quarterback found Ward in open space against a defender single-high. Ward was able to speed past Jaguars defensive back C.J. Reavis and glide his way into the end zone for the touchdown on the catch and run.  Greg Ward Jr. played quarterback in college. He's already got his first TD in the NFL as a wide receiver   The Checkdown (@thecheckdown)  Plays like Ward's touchdown are getting him noticed around the NFL -- another reason why the Eagles are facing a difficult decision to cut him.  "I'm studying like I'm a rookie," Ward said . "I'm studying like I have something to prove, which I really do. My main focus is doing it for my teammates and my family. I just keep that in the back of my head every single day. Try to come out here  Patrick Peterson Jersey and do my best."Ward had nine catches for 63 yards in the 2017 preseason for the Eagles, which was his rookie season in the league. An undrafted  Greg Dortch Jersey free agent, Ward was let go by the Eagles on 53-man roster cutdown day, but signed with the practice squad a day later. He was released again, but signed back in September of 2017. He spent the 2018 preseason with the Eagles, but failed to make the roster once again.A converted quarterback out of Houston, Ward was one of the nation's top quarterbacks, completing 67.5 percent of his pa ses for 8,704 yards and 52 touchdowns compared to 26 interceptions in his four years with the Cougars. He also rushed for 2,381 yards and 39 touchdowns. Ward did start his career at Houston as a wide receiver, just looking for an opportunity to get on the field. He had 228 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his career with the Cougars.  The Alliance of American Football was Ward's opportunity to prove he can play wide receiver at the profe sional level. Ward caught 22 pa ses for 214 yards in eight games for the San Antonio Commandeers. He made his mark in the AAF as one of the A.J. Green Jersey  league's elite punt returners, having nine returns for 135 yards (15.0 yards per return) and one touchdown, which went for 79 yards in Week 7 against the Atlanta Legends. That return was the longest in the AAF in its one and only season. Thanks to valuable game experience in the AAF, Ward is finally ready to make an impact on a NFL roster. If the Eagles don't put him on their 53-man roster, some team will take a shot at him this time around."If you have that faith, if you have that belief, you can go out there and do anything," Ward said. "I've been keeping the faith, praying every night, going to church, just working hard. Eventually, one day I know it will pay off. I'm being patient and going out here like every Rashard Lawrence Jersey  day is my last." Click here Click here Click here

The made the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history when they extended him on a four-year, $140 million deal prior to the 2019 season. Before that, however, they at least entertained the po sibility of trading the superstar. Or at least that's , who recently told ProFootballTalk the had discu sions with Seattle in 2018 regarding a potential  Javonte Williams Jersey deal for Wilson, even going as far as offering the No. 1 pick in that year's draft. The Browns contend the trade was discu sed "conceptually," per PFT, but acknowledge privately the "discu sion did indeed happen." The inclusion of a no-trade clause in Wilson's eventual big-money extension with Seattle, in fact, stemmed in part from "chatter  Albert Okwuegbunam Jersey regarding the potential trade to Cleveland," according to PFT's Mike Florio. In 2018, of course, the Browns were still eyeing a franchise QB, with the team ultimately using the No. 1 pick on current starter . The Seahawks, meanwhile, were Kyle Fuller Jersey  coming off their first season without a playoff appearance in six years -- and the first and only time Seattle has mi sed the postseason with Wilson at QB.It's not hard to suggest this was a case of Cleveland taking a swing at Wilson rather than Seattle looking to unload its QB, even with a lucrative contract looming at the time, but Florio said Thursday that some "close to the situation" still believe the Super Bowl-winning signal-caller will eventually be traded. With Wilson publicly hinting he  and Seattle on the hook Cody Conway Jersey  for close to $40 million per year toward the end of his contract, "some think it's just a matter of time" before the Seahawks move on.  Doing so, of course, would rob the team of the biggest -- and, arguably, sometimes only Jerry Jeudy Jersey  -- reason Seattle has been a consistent playoff contender. The 31-year-old Wilson, a seven-time Pro Bowler, has been both remarkably durable and productive for his entire nine-year NFL career, never once mi sing a start and throwing at least 30 touchdown pa ses in four of his last five seasons. The have parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera, tight end and also saw longtime defensive captain retire this offseason. They are entering a period of transition, and quarterback could be next to leave Carolina.Newton now has just one year left on his contract, and it's a Lance Briggs Jersey  deal the Panthers could look to unload this offseason. The final year of Newton's contract has a $21.1 million cap hit, but Carolina could save a total of $19 million in cap space if they decide to cut him or trade him. Newton mi sed 14 games this season with a foot injury and two games in 2018 Roquan Smith Jersey  with a shoulder injury. The health of the 30-year-old is going to be important when it comes to what the Panthers decide to do, and team owner David Tepper put it pretty bluntly when talking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon."Listen, I'm not a doctor," Alex Bars Jersey  said Tepper, . "I said it a million times, is he healthy? He's not a doctor, so there's a lot of different things can happen. But first is he healthy? Tell me that and then we can talk."It's a narrative that Tepper has been pushing for months now. Back in November, Tepper said that, and it will remain that way until his health is determined.  During an interview on CBS Sports Network ahead of Super Bowl LIV, Newton indicated  to the Panthers in 2020."It's devastating to not have the coach who drafted you," he said, "but at the same time, you Cairo Santos Jersey 've got to turn the page. I had an unbelievable conversation with Marty Hurney, the GM, David Tepper the owner, as well as Coach (Matt) Rhule, the new head coach. And I left that meeting inspired. And I told them, 'You won't find another person in that locker room with more to prove, not only to you, but I've got to prove to myself.'"  The former No. 1 overall pick has spent all nine seasons with the Panthers,  Xavier Crawford Jersey and how well he is doing in rehab this offseason may decide if he'll get to finish his career in Carolina.
